Launching the 2025 cohort - a new phase for the BAMT NQMT Development Scheme

BAMT is pleased to announce that the NQMT Development Scheme will launch a new cohort for January 2025, continuing the scheme outside of its initial pilot phase. The application process for mentees will open in September 2024, with mentor applications open from October 2024. The scheme is open to all newly qualified Music Therapists to support them in the transition from training to professional practice in the first two years of HCPC registration.

It up-skills and nurtures Music Therapists in order to build the best foundations for a successful career. This fully funded programme provides a combination of specialist CPD lectures for the cohort as well as group mentoring, co-ordinated by an experienced Music Therapist. Year 2 of the programme has part-peer led CPD sessions and bi-monthly group mentoring.

Clare Maddocks, Education & Research Officer said: “The NQMT scheme is something that the Operations Team and BAMT Board of Trustees is proud to be a part of and support. The challenges facing newly qualified Music Therapists continuously change, and given that co-production is at the heart of this scheme it means that it can constantly evolve to best support the future of our profession. I am grateful to all those involved in the pilot phase of the scheme as the continuation of this project is a testimony to the hard work and contributions of many."

Overview of the NQMT Development Scheme

Launched in January 2023, the Newly Qualified Development Scheme is a free 2-year mentoring and CPD programme open to Newly Qualified Music Therapists. In the first year, recipients of the scheme access monthly group mentoring with an experienced Music Therapist and also attend a monthly online CPD event. In the second year, the mentoring and CPD events transition to bi-monthly, providing a pathway through which further support can be accessed during the first two years of professional practice.

Co-production is at the heart of the NQMT scheme, and so each year the cohort of NQ Therapists provide suggestions of what CPD they wish to access. This can range from how to set up freelance work, gain additional music technology skills to further verbal intervention training and case studies. In the second year, the CPD events take on a more experiential approach, for example looking to provide further ways to build on additional skills such as developing innovative practice, leadership skills or marketing.

The BAMT Board and Core Team are proud to support this free scheme which provides invaluable support, connection and a sense of community during the transition from training into qualified registration.
