Music as a mechanism of change in disorders of consciousness: how and why does music “work”?'

Drawing on the neuroscience, rehabilitation and music therapy literature, this presentation will examine music therapy with children and adults with disorders of consciousness. By considering the latest theoretical propositions for the effects of music with this population, we will explore the possible mechanisms of change, with illustrations of case material. An overview of recent research developments on this topic will be shared to point to future directions on this topic as relevant to music therapy.
