The Music Therapy Charity (the MTC)

is pleased to announce funding for a PhD Fellowship in either music therapy and dementia or music therapy and early years. Applications are invited (see below) from prospective PhD supervisors to host this fellowship, who must submit their application to the MTC through their institution's research operations office.

The PhD fellowship offers a talented student the opportunity to undertake high-quality research studies that will directly or indirectly benefit music therapy clients and that will significantly advance knowledge in the field of music therapy. It is expected that the successful supervisor will openly advertise this fellowship through their University to recruit a suitable PhD candidate.

Fellowship awards will include:

Relevant PhD fees (UK rates)

A stipend for the PhD student

Research costs (e.g. conference attendance, items of small equipment, transcription costs, meeting costs, and expenses for service-user participants)

Dissemination and publication costs, including at least one open-access publication

Assessment will consider the extent to which the project proposals fulfil the following criteria:

  • Specified appropriately so as to be feasible for completion through a PhD study.
  • Demonstrate appropriate study design and research methods.
  • Describe the use of appropriate methods in which the supervisor is expert.
  • Describe an area in which the supervisor has content expertise.
  • Feasible within a doctoral programme where the student might need to gain approvals and undergo training.
  • Prepare the ground work for larger project applications in the future.
  • Likely to make a valuable contribution to the field.
  • Likely to enhance research skills and develop capacity.

Applications should not exceed two pages and follow the format below:

Title; Supervisor/s; Background; Research aims and objectives; Research design; Significance for the field; Proposed budget.

Application deadline: Friday, 27 July 2018

Funding decision: Tuesday, 11 September 2018
