Certificate in Supportive Music and Imagery (SMI)
January 16 (evening) 2026, January 17 & 18 (full days), January 23 (evening) 24 & 25 (full days), ONLINE
SMI is a music-centred therapy method used to help clients develop and deepen the connection to their inner strengths and resources. The method involves the client in art-making (or other expressive arts) whilst listening to music they have chosen with the therapist’s support, the music potentially of diverse traditions and genres. SMI is intended to improve general wellbeing and support clients to cope with the challenges of everyday living and become more resilient. There is an emphasis on collaboration and on the empowerment of the client. SMI is suitable for short-term therapy (e.g. 7 sessions) that can be effectively delivered online as well as in person. SMI is both a systematic and a flexible, client-centred approach. It has a wide range of clinical application and can be used with individuals and groups, and with children, young people and adults.
The comprehensive online training covers all aspects of the delivery of SMI with an emphasis on experiential learning. Case presentation of work with children, adults and groups is included along with theory. Following the training seminar is a period of supervised client work before qualifying. The course is open to qualified music therapists and other mental health practitioners with a similar level of training and qualification.

Low Cost Music and Imagery (MI) therapy with therapists completing training
If you’re a music therapist or trainee music therapist interested in experiencing MI, low cost therapy is available with therapists completing their training. MI, which involves art-making whilst listening to music, works well online or can take place in-person if practical and preferred. Depending on therapist’s availability and the level of training they are completing, you may either be able to receive a short series of 7 Supportive Music and Imagery (SMI) sessions, or a slightly longer series of Re-educative MI (RMI), e.g. 10-12 sessions. Where SMI is oriented towards the development of inner resources and can support therapist’s self-care, RMI focuses more directly on addressing mental health issues. Please note that receiving a series of MI sessions will not equip you to deliver MI with clients for which specialist training is required.
