Introduction to Rap & HipHop Therapy

BAMT is pleased to launch this online CPD event for Music Therapists and other professionals.

This training day is committed to exploring the therapeutical benefits of Rap and Hip-hop, offering a range of practical rap exercises and exploring how or when they could be used to support therapy. “Hip-hop is a culture not a race”. Conversations on race, diversity, cultural appropriation and social class will take place and a case study will be presented and discussed.

Facilitated by Naviella Dowds of Lyrical Minds, this training seeks to bridge a gap within the Music Therapy profession, with the objectives being:

Knowledge Acquisition

All too often Rap & Hip-Hop music and Hip–Hop culture are suppressed due to the fear of the unknown and the uncertainties around cultural appropriation. Participants will gain an introductory insight into Hip-Hop history and where Rap originated from and how, why it can be used as a powerful interactive mental health tool. Learning about lyrical content, different sub genres of Hip-Hop used for expression and discussions on racial and social biases.

Skill Development

Participants will be encouraged to take part in some Rap skill exercises, participants who have never rapped before or listened to rap music can feel comfortable in knowing that they will get to experience rapping and creating lyrics at a beginner's level. Participants will be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of the therapeutical benefits of Rap & HipHop and how it may be used. Participants will have completed a Lyrical Minds basic introduction to Rap & HipHop therapy workbook by the end of the day.

Professionalism Outcomes

The Rap & Hip-Hop activities will support developmental professional skills or knowledge around the subject. Improving your communication skills and client care when facilitating Rap & Hip-Hop in therapy. A basic understanding of some equality and diversity obstacles that you may face as a therapist or client.
