Ben Saul, Trustee and Employment Liaison Officer
BAMT offers advice and support when setting up jobs and during employment. The organisation also acts as a focus point for advertising new work. Employers and employees in music therapy can benefit from our service. There are several likely pitfalls along the way to establishing new work and good working relationships. Observing our guidance may help to avoid some of these difficulties.
It is important to be able to analyse all aspects of setting up and maintaining work, being clear about the cost of music therapy for the employer versus what the therapist can reasonably charge and the services that can be provided. There is a great wealth of specialised knowledge in different fields of employment within BAMT, so we can provide information, particularly when creating a new job or facing change in your service. The BAMT Employment Liaison Officer can help you with this work.
All Music Therapists practising in the UK are required to be registered with the HPC. Members practisng in other countries should maintain similar standards of professional integrity. Apart from this, for successful employments, managerial and clinical responsibility should be clearly established, and ideally job descriptions should help recruit the right person for a service's needs and clarify expectations for all. The BAMT can advise you on all of these issues, help to develop posts and signpost you to other resources should you need further support.
